It is not often that despite all the press coverage, a place still manages to exceed expectations, but The Newt’s Great Garden Escape was everything and more than it promised to be.

The Newt’s latest offering, entitled enticingly , “The Great Garden Escape” is a day away from London and a chance to experience their garden in all it’s many forms,  their cuisine and their cyder!!

At a time when we have all learnt to appreciate the power of nature, and to witness the subtle changes of the seasons this ‘arcadian’ escape could not be better timed.

First class rail travel was enhanced by freshly baked delights on both journeys: breakfast washed down with freshly squeezed clementine juice and afternoon tea accompanied by an award-winning wine from their South African wine estate Babylonstoren.

Walks through woods opened out on to a parabola planted with over 70 different varieties of apples, a Victorian fragrance garden, a cottage garden inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, a modern water cascade and even a water spouting toad to keep all ages amused. And all set within the boundaries of the beautiful Somerset landscape with views of The Glastonbury Tor in the background.

The  Newt’s latest addition to this idyl is The Beezantium , a place to marvel at hives explore the working life of the bee and to witness the extraordinary miracle of nature: the production of honey. It also happens to be the first bee house of its kind in the UK. Each of our tours was led by a Newt specialist whose passion and expertise shone through.

By the time we returned to the hustle and bustle of London life, we truly felt that we had “escaped’. The experience had been joyful, enlightening and faultless in every way. The attention to detail was superb and just in case we felt ever so slightly nostalgic, we were sent home with a packet of seeds  with which to plant our very own arcadia!

Holly caught up with the charming Barry O’Callaghan recently to hear about his exquisite collection of 5 star boutique hotels in Ireland – CLIFF. Owner of CLIFF and Chairman of Rise Global, Barry is renowned as one of Ireland’s finest visionary and creative minds in the world of education and his love of Ireland and in particular Ardmore in County Waterford, is very apparent in each of his unique hotel offerings.

Holly chatted to the Chairman of ICMI Dr Sin Chai recently, about his stunning luxury Scottish hotel collection and in particular, the beautiful 19th Century Inverlochy Castle. A Dream Escape favourite is the J.K. Rowling Suite in The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. This elegant Suite beautifully blends contemporary design accents with unique features to magical effect. Enter the suite, past the owl door knocker, and walk through the star-filled entranceway into the lounge. From the marble bust of Hermes that J.K. Rowling signed when she finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this very suite, to the antique furnishings, this light-flooded space is adorned with quirky items. Large windows reveal stunning views of Calton Hill, while turreted alcoves add charm.

We also love the Kiplin Suite in Brown’s Hotel in London. Named after esteemed author Rudyard Kipling, who penned The Jungle Book at Brown’s Hotel, the Kipling Suite is their most distinguished residence. From the cheeky monkey statue outside the door to a framed handwritten letter from the author himself, there are playful nods to Kipling throughout.

Set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular Hampshire parkland is Highclere Castle.  It has been home to the Carnarvon family since 1842, however more recently it has risen in recognition due to the award-winning drama series and movie, Downton Abbey.

Holly thoroughly enjoyed chatting to the 8^th Earl of Carnarvon, on her “Chatting with Holly” podcast series, to learn all about his heritage and the dream of his Great Great Grandfather, the 3^rd Earl, creating such an incredible gothic Italian mansion and parkland.

Over the years, Dream Escape has enjoyed working with Lord and Lady Carnarvon at Highclere Castle, from private lunches, dinners and intimate afternoon teas, hosted by Lord and Lady Carnarvon; to champagne receptions in the entrance hall with roaring log fires, “I could almost have been on the set of Downton Abbey!” remembers one of our team fondly.

Highclere is still a working Estate and Farm that has opened up for private visits and events and visiting Highclere is a truly unique experience as you are sure to uncover the real people and stories behind this amazing historic property. There are many wonderful experiences from etiquette lessons to private tours of the magnificent gardens. An afternoon can disappear wandering around the glorious arboretum and wild flower meadow or you can enjoy a private visit to the Highclere Stud which is one of the leading independent stud farms located in the stunning 300 acres of undulating hills and lush grassland. This stud has been carefully developed as a prime breeding and rearing facility since its establishment in 1902 and is currently run by Lord Carnarvon’s sister and brother-in-law.

Visit the grand, opulent State Rooms and find out what life was like in Highclere’s heyday. You will learn about Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon, who converted Highclere Castle into a hospital in September 1914 and see many original artefacts dating back to the 18^th century.   Highclere is also home to the Egyptian Exhibition featuring archaeological finds uncovered by the castle’s former resident, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. This highly acclaimed exhibition tells the thrilling story of how Lord Carnarvon and his companions unearthed the lost tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

Unbelievably there are over 300 bedrooms at Highclere Castle, with the upper floor having undergone major restoration, the rooms are opulently decorated and furnished, with each detail providing a unique insight into Highclere Castle’s history. There are even opportunities to stay in the recently restored Lodge and Round Towers on the Estate, but it is Christmas at Highclere when the property really comes to life. This is when Lord and Lady Carnarvon host special Christmas tours and welcome you into their home. A big tree and roaring fires, after a game shoot and Christmas carols, what more could you ask for?

Holly recently caught up with Paul Szkiler, owner of the stunning Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. The castle was acquired by Paul and Poppy Szkiler in 2015 and since then, they have transformed it into not just a wonderful place to stay but a stunning ‘destination offering’, that embraces the spectacular coastline and islands where it sits. The castle is located in a beautiful and hidden part of Scotland.  The locations provides a unique gateway to many of the Hebridean islands and is ideal for clients who are looking for different, off the beaten track experiences.

There is no doubt that Paul is a visionary, “immersing guests with the local traditions and opening up a part of Scotland that is relatively untouched”, was always part of his master plan. Worth a mention are the new Hebridean Sea Safari experiences, which are unique to Glenapp and a ‘must’ for any visitor to the Castle. A private chef will be on board and the professional crew will navigate you towards remote islands like Jura or Islay,  coastal castles and distant inns. Enjoy lunch at one of the many famous sea food restaurants, before arriving at an island or beach where luxury glamping in the wild can be arranged. A  ‘dram’ before a chef prepares a memorable dinner under the stars will guarantee an adventure which few have experienced before, or you can return back to the luxury of your castle where you can enjoy various fine dining experiences, formal or informal and of course their beautiful afternoon teas.

Travelling between islands you will spot bountiful sea and bird life, or go ashore to the site of an ancient monastery, archaeological site, hidden castle garden, or whisky distillery. You may also see ‘Ripley’ the sea eagle, ‘Ripley’ has been trained aboard the boat to catch fish in the local waters. At 7 pounds and with a wing span of 7 feet she is a formidable hunter and can easily take fish up to 4 pounds in weight.

Broomhall House is an exceptional and unique experience for clients coming to Scotland. For the first time since it was built more than 300 years ago, Broomhall House, the ancestral seat of the Earls of Elgin and the Fife home of the family of King Robert the Bruce, has opened its doors.

Each experience is different and tailored to client’s particular interests. A private guided tour conducted by Lord Bruce himself, will showcase this remarkable property and bring his extraordinary family history to life. The Bruce family has been at the heart of Scotland’s story for centuries; the most famous family member is the now legendary King Robert the Bruce who successfully defended Scottish independence in 1314.   

The house contains an internationally important collection of fine art and artefacts, including the 14th century Sword of State of King Robert the Bruce, which is kept in front of a fine 16th century carved mantlepiece created from sections of the royal marriage bed of James VI and Anne of Denmark, who were married in Denmark in 1589.

The property also has a wonderful collection of books which include a first edition of “A Geneva Bible” c. 1560 which belonged to one of Scotland’s greatest Protestant reformers, Rev. Robert Bruce.

Pic. 2. This cast is taken from a mould made in 1818 when the king’s body was accidentally disturbed during the refurbishment of Dunfermline Abbey. King Robert was buried in a crypt beneath a spectacular marble tomb in 1329 but unfortunately it was totally destroyed in the Reformation. On discovering his body in 1818, researchers identified over a dozen further Royal burials in the choir of the abbey, providing incontrovertible evidence that Dunfermline was once the royal necropolis of Scotland, equivalent to Westminster Abbey.
