The stunning English countryside stretching south from the Scottish border is an area of outstanding beauty dotted with picturesque small towns, historic buildings and unspoilt natural features.

The glacial lakes and rugged fell mountains of the Lake District and the windswept moors, valleys and villages of the Yorkshire Dales have long been a source of inspiration to authors and literary figures that chose to live and work there. This programme visits the best-loved places associated with these writers combined with outstanding experiences and luxury accommodation.

THINGS TO DO

LAKE WINDERMERE CRUISE

From the pier in Windermere board a steamship for a short cruise on the lake. As you travel around the lake, see why this area appealed so much to Arthur Ransome who based many of the locations for “Swallows and Amazons” here, including the fabled Wild Cat Island

LITERARY LAKE DISTRICT

Follow in the footsteps of literary greats with visits to charming towns and historic homes, all of which boast impressive literary connections. Visit Hill Top cottage to see where Beatrix Potter penned many of her famous works, or visit Dove Cottage which is now a quaint museum packed full of memorabilia linked to William Wordsworth, its former resident.

HAWORTH MOOR

The ruined farmhouse, Top Withens, sitting alone, high on the moors is generally believed to have inspired the eponymous farmhouse in Wuthering Heights. To get there, take walk from the Brontë Waterfalls and the Brontë Bridge that is widely thought to be one of the sisters’ favourite places to admire the peaceful but often bleak countryside

BRONTE PARSONAGE MUSEUM

Haworth Parsonage is where the Brontë Sisters grew up with their father during the 19th century. Their inspirational home has now been turned into a museum; Brontë Parsonage Museum and holds the world’s largest collection of Brontë manuscripts, furniture and personal possessions. There is a vivid portrayal of the life and works of the three sisters whose novels have become such an important part of the cannon of English literature. Highlights include some of the sisters’ childhood treasures, such as the ‘little books’ they wrote together and poems written by Emily. Perhaps the most interesting room in the parsonage is the dining room, where Charlotte, Emily and Anne wrote most.  You can still see the table, complete with inkblots and a small carved letter E, where the sisters wrote their masterpieces, respectively Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

LAKE ULLSWATER

It was on the banks of Ullswater by Gowbarrow that William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy were walking in 1802 when they came across a “host of golden daffodils”, thus inspiring his best known poem.

TARN HOWS

Tarn Hows are one of the best-loved beauty spots in all England. These small, tranquil lakes offer an ideal setting for a short hike

PLACES VISITED

THE LAKE DISTRICT

The Lake District is considered by many to be amongst the most picturesque areas in all of England. Renowned English poet William Wordsworth said of the Lake District that there is “nowhere in so narrow a compass with such a variety of the sublime and beautiful”. In 2017 it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status, the first of the UK’s national parks to be given this. It is the area’s combination of breath-taking natural landscape alongside its cultural links to art and literature that makes it so unique, and indeed, so worthy of preserving.

YORKSHIRE DALES

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is home to some of Yorkshire’s most iconic scenery and attractions. With spectacular limestone valleys, picturesque villages and historic castles, it is a place that stirs the emotions and stimulates the senses of every visitor. The National Park was established in 1954 and covers an area of 680 square miles, straddling the central Pennines.
