The Royal Hospital Chelsea, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was founded by King Charles II in 1682 as a retreat for veterans. To this day, it is a retirement and nursing home for approximately 300 British Soldiers. Every year the grounds are transformed into show gardens – creative small gardens and vibrant horticultural displays that make up the world’s most prestigious flower show. The show is the pinnacle of the horticultural calendar, and is guaranteed to inspire. By special arrangement, your attendance will be organised on “Members’ Day”, thus ensuring the experience of this much loved horticultural event is everything it should be.
Day Five: The Garden on England
Travel south to the “garden of England”, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens. It was created by Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson and from 1930 it became the most admired English Garden of its time. Few great gardens live up to their reputations as effortlessly as this. It is a large connoisseurs’ garden consisting of a series of small stylised romantic areas enclosed by the surviving parts of an Elizabethan mansion and is a much admired example of the Arts and Crafts style of Garden.
Visit RHS Garden Wisley, the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society. It is considered one of the great gardens in the world, and is home to some of the largest plant collections. Encompassing some 240 acres, the garden is an absolute must see, offering ideas and inspiration on design, innovation and cultivation.
Day Six: Blenheim Palace
Travel to Blenheim Palace for a very special visit. The house itself is a masterpiece of English baroque architecture with beautiful features such as the painted ceiling in the Saloon.
Two private guided tours beckon. First, discover the Bedrooms upstairs in the Palace, find out about their contents and hear tales of the family and illustrious guests who have stayed here. Next, visit the areas used by household staff both past and present, showcasing what life was like working in the Palace across the last three centuries.
However, it is the 2,000 acres of gardens, the exquisite works of 18th century landscape architect Lancelot “Capability” Brown, which make the place so very special. It’s small wonder that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987.
